Wawancara Fajar Ramayel dari Dawnimagion Studio Berbagi perjalanan menggarap Paddle Pop Imagira

Kutubukukartun-Last month, fans of the Shorts-running franchise Paddlepop were treated to a special treat when Paddlepop premiered on Emtek’s Vidio. Written and directed by animator Fajar Ramayel (famous for “Lukisan Napas”), the 4-episode season features the same premise and characters as the adventure series, but offer a stellar voice cast. This is an extension of the brand’s previous 3D-style that was released a few years earlier that featured the iconic duo’s return.

Kubuka:Thank you so much for taking the time for our questions! Can you tell us when and how you got involved with this new imaginative take on Paddle pop?

Fajar Ramayel: Hi, sorry for the late reply. Just to clarify, the writer is not me, but my colleague Mega Tania, although I also contributed to the story as the job description from the director. Regarding the Paddle Pop Imagira project, I was first contacted by Cuatrodia Creative as the Productions House trusted by Unilever to work on this project. Since Cuatrodia and I have had a good relationship for a long time and have been involved in several previous projects, it was not too difficult to get chemistry in the workflow.

Kubuka: When did you start working on it and how long did it take to complete?

Fajar Ramayel: The project itself started in March 2024, literally starting from zero. In Paddle Pop this time, there was a request from Unilever to brand the characters Max, Liona, and Shadow Master as the 3 main characters from the previous Paddle Pop series, with the hope that the three characters could look fresh in the eyes of the new generation. We successfully completed this project at the end of July 2024. With 5 months of very intense work.

Kubuka: What was it about this show and characters that drew you to the project?, was it the characters or the story or what?

Fajar Ramayel: First, because Paddle Pop is an IP that is quite legendary from previous films, so it will be a challenging project for me, especially in this latest version, the main characters are re-branded. Secondly, because I will be able to get to know more on animation industry players by joining this project. Thirdly, because the theme of the film is fantasy, so I feel like I have the opportunity to make a fantasy film like Disney films.

Kubuka: In your opinion, what is the biggest challenge in bringing this well-established famous show to the millennial generation?

Fajar Ramayel: The biggest challenge in producing this film is translating the need for re-branding based on the needs of the Paddle Pop brand with a story that relates to the current generation. Especially the previous Max character design that was very attached to the minds of the millennial generation when we were young and also generation z. There were some criticisms from viewers of the Paddle Pop series in the past, we accepted it as constructive suggestions and input for us in the future.

Kubuka: How many people worked on the show with you?

Fajar Ramayel: Around 30 people, I don’t know the exact number, because there was also a production team from the vendor studio

Fajar Ramayel: Do you plan to make more episodes in the future than just 4 episodes?

Fajar Ramayel: That depends on the brand, if one day I am again entrusted to direct the next Paddle Pop series, I will be happy to accept it.

Kubuka: Do you have a favorite moment in the show?

Fajar Ramayel: My favorite moment in the movie is in eps. 3, which is when Max fights his enemy named Ton in giant form. I think the production is quite exciting, because we have to visualize Max and Liona flying here and there fighting the giant, so the angles and camera movements need to be really thought out, especially since the duration is very short (only about 3 minutes).

Kubuka: And Last, what do you think about the reception of the new animated version?

Fajar Ramayel: In this latest version, I see two camps of audience reception. Some like it, especially because the Paddle Pop adventure returns, but there are also those who don’t like the appearance of the latest Max and Liona’s designs, probably because they are already attached to previous design of the character Max and Liona which is very iconic. However, because we as the production team have done the best we can, so I leave the rest to the audience.

You can currently watch Paddlepop Imagira on Vidio. This show was created and developed by Fajar Ramyel and produced by several collaborative animation studios.
